About the Position

Harris Health System is seeking a PRN Physician to join the Correctional Health team. This role offers flexibility while providing the opportunity to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care to individuals housed in the Harris County Jail.

Responsibilities include performing intake health assessments, managing urgent and chronic conditions, and collaborating with advanced practice providers and interdisciplinary teams. You will work closely with Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies, nursing staff, and on-site services such as radiology, pharmacy, laboratory, dental, and nutrition services.

This position requires strong clinical judgment, adaptability, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Requirements

  • Education:

    • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)

    • Board Certified or Board-Eligible in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine

    • Must obtain and maintain board certification within required timeframe

  • Licensure:

    • Active Texas Medical Board license

    • Active DEA license

  • Experience:

    • Completion of an ACGME-accredited 3- or 4-year residency program

  • Clinical Skills:

    • Proficiency in suturing, splinting, and EKG interpretation

    • Strong clinical judgment and patient care skills

  • Communication Skills:

    • Above Average Verbal (heavy public contact)

    • Exceptional verbal communication (public speaking)

    • Strong written communication (correspondence and reports)

  • Technical Skills:

    • Computer proficiency

  • Knowledge/Skills:

    • Analytical abilities

    • Mathematics and medical terminology

    • Research knowledge and capabilities

  • Work Schedule:

    • PRN / as-needed basis

    • Flexible schedule including holidays

    • Leave requests must be submitted 60 days in advance
